Dear all,

What would be the best way to calculate/estimate the discharge in a pipe when the available data consist of pipe material (roughness), slope, lenght, diameter and upstream water level.

I need an estimation for the discharge - water depth -curve for a specific pipe. It would be easier with downstream water level and/or flow velocity, but now I have to manage without them.

Best regards,

Johann.

HY8 is DOS and has a big learnign curve. A more user-friendly - and free - method, go here and download:

Create a Pond as a catch basin (so you don't need storage).
Define Outlet as a culvert.
Double click on Pond.
Click on Discharge.
It will be a HW:Discharge curve.
Click on Table (and shrink, depending on increments desired).
You can readily edit while reading the resulting changes, if you want.
You can export table to Excel, if you want.
You can export graph as an image, if you want.

A windows interface is now provided on the FHWA website for HY8 to generate the data file, run the program and to display the results in html format. Learning curve to operate the program is not so bad anymore. However, there is a learning curve to understand how to analyze culvert hydraulics...
