In autoCAD 2000, how do you change the scale from 1:1, to 1/4, or 1:48. I want to make a house in it and if I try in the normal scale, the drawing gets too big.

wow! that must be some house for the file size to be that big. My suggestion is to (always!!) draw 1:1; you can decrease the size the file by drawing different parts of the house as individual drawings. Example floor plan, HVAC, Electrical and so on should all be done as separte drawings. Next Create a drawing called master and xref the seperate drawings into it for the over all blueprint. Create all drawings in model space. When you get ready to plot the drawing change to paper space and create a border that matches your desired paper size. Now create a mview to see the drawing and to zoom 1/4" = 1' simply zoom, 1/48xp, (from inside the floating model space. Now plot your drawing out 1:1 and you have a drawing that is to 1/4" scale. other scales 1/96xp is 1/8" = 1'
1/192xp is 1/16" = 1'.
Hope this helps.
