How to control overclosures and penetrations ?

Hi all,

I am working on simple axisymmetric model where two objects come in contact(friction less) to face the load normal to the contact.

Two objects are highly deformable bodies(E=0.69MPa) subjected to compressive pressure 1.2Mpa normal to the contact. deformation can be expected more than 60%.

Because of this, high penetrations and overclosures are occuring during simulation, and the solution is getting terminated.
How can i control the solution ? I already used the following
*Contact controls, Automatic tolerances
*CONTROLS, ANALYSIS = DISCONTINUOUS
*Controls, parameter=time incrementation
20, 10, 12, 30, 10, , , , ,

How can i control the penetrations and overclosures ????

I even tried to use a membrane(E= 1Mpa) between the bodies of to avoid contact difficulties, but still the problem persists....

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks and regards,
krishna

You should probably leave the contact controls at their defaults and try some other basic troubleshooting steps:

1) Are your surfaces meshed fine enough?
2) If the meshes have varying densities, then the slave surface should have the finer mesh
3) Try using the various contact formulations. Depending on the situation node-to-surface or surface-to-surface may work better
4) Use the finite sliding formulation instead of small sliding
5) Make sure your time increment is small enough.
6) Make sure you are using a large deformation material model for your bodies (e.g. a hyperelastic model).

The list goes on.... And I'm sure others can add to it. But manually tweaking the contact controls should be your last resort...
