Could someone suggest the easiest and accurate way to create golf ball in UG. Second question is how can I create the pattern look like a soccer ball. So finished product will look like a set of pentagons sorrounded by hexagons. Total number of patches should be 400 on sphere diameter 280mm. There must be some formula to workout the sizes of patches? Thanks in advance.

Kevin

You have to do a little trig first and separate the hexagons and pentagons into their component triangles for the Soccer ball which I've done before in order to figure out what angles you need to have between your Hexagon and Pentagon faces then make some angled datums or surface transforms to get a group you can pattern by 60 degrees around a central axis.

UG can help you out a bit by allowing you to create lines you can use as references for element length and angle measurement.

With this info and some Tan(angle) equations you should be good to go.

The golf ball shouldn't be too difficult, create a sphere then array smaller spheres around that and subtract them from the main sphere.

The soccer ball will be considerably more work. The soccer ball pattern is known mathematically as a truncated icosahedron. This shape only has 32 faces (12 pentagon, 20 hexagon). To extend this to 400 faces, you will probably have to come up with your own formula, as mjcole suggests. In addition to mjcole's post I would suggest searching the web on terms such as "tesselate" and "sphere"; maybe you'll get lucky and this has been done before. One more thing to think about, will the 400 faces be inscribed or circumscribed about your given diameter?

Someone did a soccer ball and posted it in the internal bbs about a year ago. It may have been the master of UG demos.
