When I insert an excel file unlinked I can crop the object showing only the portion I want in SW. I can't seem to find out how to crop a linked excel file in SW.

You can't control what worksheet or how much of that sheet shows? So linking excel files is useless?

I was thinking of cropping like you do in SW... You can't crop an excel sheet like that.

You can adjust it by dragging the bottom right corner (black square) of the Excel sheet when it's active.

1) Double click the Sheet
2) Takes you into Excel within SW
3) Drag the black square in the bottom corners to adjust sheet size

You are only allowed so many rows and columns (dependent upon size of both) or the excel sheet will be cut off. This is an OLE limitation and it’s not a SW issue. It’s an Excel or MS issue.

When I insert an excel sheet "unlinked" I can double click the object and "crop" it the way you describe. I geuss you are right it is not cropping; sorry for the confusion.

The problem is when I double click a "linked" excel file, it opens excel and the file (not within SW, but just as if I had opened the file normally) and there is no way to adjust what shows or what is hidden.

When you say "linked" - Are you talking about inserting a Design table into a Drawing?

If so, then you have to set the size at the Part/assembly level then it is transformed to the drawing itself. See help I believe this in there.
