how to decide the time for case hardening?

i heard the rule of thumb in heat treatment is that one hour per inch. I assume this is meant to be through hardening. is there any rule of thumb for case hardening?

Are you carburizing your parts? You can use Harris equation to predict the case depth.

For a specific carburizing temperature:
Case Depth = k (square root of time)
Where k is a constant.
t is time (hours) at temperature.
Case Depth is in inches.
