Just looking for hints -- I am facing comity applications that require this information, not sure if they'll accept "approximate" answers that can't be verified. For NCEES, I have to be able to click pull-down menus for dates, there's no place to enter explanation or annotation.

On what date did I sit for the FE exam? (Was sometime in 1978 or 1979).
How many hours was it? (I seem to remember it being 8 hours).
On what date did I sit for the PE exam? (Was sometime in 1985).
How many hours was it? (I am sure it was 8 hours).

I don't have any records that old -- and my state board only has records of the issuance of my license, not the original application.

Any thoughts will be appreciated! I don't know where to start looking...

Good on y'all,

Both were 8 hours

Back in the '80s - just subtract about three months from date of issuance. That's about how long it took.

BTW - if your state can't find the records - NCEES surely won't be able to either. Not all exams were under their guidance until mid '80s or so I think.

On your certificate(s), there should be a date as to when they were issued. Based on that date, back up to the nearest April or November, and that is probably about when the test was - the month.

As for the day, unless you saved the paperwork from the board as to the date of the test, you may be lost.

The board may still have a record of test dates from the past. Dig deeper.

FYI:

I took my PE exam in April, 1979, got the letter notification in August, and the signed and dated certificate in September.

And I concur that they both were 8 hours - 8 grueling hours.

Thanks tons!

I'll go from there, I found in the meantime a classmate in college who took the FE with me. He's never thrown away a calendar or piece of paper in his life, and will get back to me tomorrow...

I didn't remember the April and November marks, but I do now that msquared mentioned them.

Good on y'all!

Were exams ever offered in Nov? Always they thought they were offered in April and Oct.

Your state board where you received your Professional Engineering license should have all of the record information on exam dates and scores, and should forward it to the State where you are applying for license by comity. I would try to use approximate dates 10/79.

An approximate date should work 4/79 or 10/79. Back then, at least in NY, the FE was always on Friday; PE was always on Thursday.

The October exams were usually before Halloween. April would vary because of Easater and Passover.

If you took the FE exam before graduation from college, the pass date was typically your graduation date, even though you might have taken and passed the exam somewhat prior to that.

I took my FE exam in October 1975, but my certificate date is my graduation date (August 1976). I took my PE exam in October 1980 and received my certificate in April 1981.

Yes...exams are given in April and October, Usually the last Thursday/Friday or Friday/Saturday of the month.

Thanks again, all!!!

Finally got someone on the phone to say that "Best Guess" is OK for stuff that old. Since it's the exam date, not the certificate, I'm going with 10/79 FE and 4/85 P&P.

My college buddies don't remember either.

I'm actually pretty sure about them now... But it's been quite a memory-stretcher.

Looked back in my records and I still have the dates I took all the exams. I also have copies of the "letters" we all waited for.

EIT: Dec 5, '70; letter received Mar 2, '71
PE: Apr 6, '79; Letter received Jul 23, '79
SE: Apr 10 & 11, '81; Letter received Jul 17, '81
