Assuming it's a native I-DEAS .prt file then to import it properly you need the .pkg file that goes with it. If you don't have it you can use Adopt.

Search back on previous threads, this has come up a few times before.

I have ideas v7 and i used the function /ma it but I can't seem to find the type of file it is. it is a .prt but what type of file is that..

thanks

A .prt could be an I-DEAS part file. (It could also be a Pro-E part file if you don't know its' origin.)

If it's an I-DEAS .prt then through Manage Items, ie.
/ma it
Select Adopt (Bottom RHS)
Select a Project and Library to place it in and then select the file and press OK.

RCDLtd,

I want to thank you for you help... I will find out the orgins of this file first....if it is pro-e i will translate it to iges...

again thanks

atn57,

Pro/E parts usually have a .prt.# extension and contain text Pro/E in the file which you can search for in a text editor.
