How to keep Datum Planes usable

I would like to know how to keep the datum planes from disappearing in my part files. I have added 3 datum planes, but as soon as I use them the planes move from the unused items folder to the feature that last used the sketch. For instance as soon as I draw a sketch on a plane, extrude or cut with that sketch the plane moves to that extrude feature and disappears from the screen. I'm running NX4, any ideas????!?!?!

Can you consistently reproduce this behavior? I've seen it on occasion with NX 4, but it usually only happened after some odd edit or update which appeared to have a problem and so I've never been able to reproduce it on demand, and after I moved to NX 5 and now NX 6, it seems to no longer occur.

It happens pretty much everytime I use a datum plane for a feature. If I want to make another sketch on that plane I have to go and dig through the feature tree and see what feature it is under to use it again.

Could it be something wrong with my part template? I am using the Master Modeler Template that came with NX4.

What is the QRM you are using and also the MP.. many time this can also be valid point to suspect of weird behaviour of NX..

If you use the Timestamp Order in the Part Navigator I think you will find that the Datum Planes have merely been set Hidden. Also, you can use Edit -> Show and Hide -> Show... and just select the Datum Planes that you wish to be made visible again.

QRM Quick Release Maintenance - A type of patch. Usually restricted to something rather specific.

MP Maintenance Pack, a more general type of patch collection of bug fixes.

I don't know if both forms of the terminology are current anymore. But don't get bogged down by that stuff. Just go into Help>About NX>System info and quote the top three lines, usually it reads something like

NX Version 5.0.4.1
NX Phase Unknown
NX Patch Unknown

That should be more than enough to tell anyone what they need to know.

I am showing

NX Version 4.0.4.2
NX Phase Unknown
NX Patch Unknown

Are these patches free with a current NX licence? I just wonder if our IT department has access to these, if not were can we get a hold of them?

If you are paying your monthly maintenance fee, then you can access the Siemens download site as well as being eligible for phone support on at least software issues, hardware issues will depend on other factors like using certified equipment, etc.

At the top of your license sheet or license file, you will see a Webkey access code. You use this to initially set up your Webkey account at the Siemens support site. Once you have your account setup, you can change your login information if you wish, and then you'll have access to the downloads for which you are licensed. There might be some items to address concerning IP addresses and the website, but don't worry about it until it is an issue....you can call support for help with that, I believe, and they should be able to get you pointed in the right direction.

In this case, the datum plane moves out of the 'unused' folder because it is no longer 'unused'. Try toggling the part navigator into timestamp order, that may be the view you are looking for.

You have pretty much the latest standard release. I have the same and I kind of doubt a bug is the cause in this case.

I think your terminology of folders is somewhat unfamiliar although there is a similarity with windows files and folders that I can relate to if you're not using the part navigator in timestamp order. Oh and the icons look the same so what else would you call it. I pretty much always use timestamp order so I would be unfamiliar with that terminology in general.
Hence the difficulty is probably with interpreting your query. I think they're either blanked/hidden or on another layer.
