Hello everyone I'm newer to the QC side of things and just curious how to know exactly which filler rod to use for certain materials.. any help would be appreciated. Soo for instance if I'm welding P-8 to P-8 there's a whole list to use of filler metals. Me previously being a welder I just know which wire to use but its confusing on some alloys that I've never welded or worked on before..

That's why we have welding procedures...to give information on how to weld basemetal A to basemetal B. Also, most filler metal companies (ex. Lincoln) have filler metal selection guides to get you started.

AWS D1.6 includes a matrix of Austenitic stainless steels and recommended filler metals. You can also use the WRC diagram as modified by Dr. Kotecki and Dr. Liphold (sorry if the spelling is incorrect) that can also be found in AWS D1.6, You can calculate the chrome and nickel equivalents to see if you have sufficient ferrite to avoid solidification cracking and yet avoid sigma phase. It also provides an estimate of the morphology. Good stuff. There was an article written on using the diagram in AWS' Inspection Trends. It should still be available in the archives. No charge to download it. The article was authored by Albert Moore.

Go through ASME Section IX to know about P nos, F nos etc.
