We are installing nx6 and we are looking for instructions and/or guidelines on how to update our custom files from nx5 for use in nx6.

For example, the ugii_env.dat,
our customized drafting standards,
our customer defaults,
our sheet and part templates,

We have a centralized cam resource directory copied from nx5.
How do we know which files have changed in nx6 or do we just need to replace them all.

Thanks,

Your 'ugii_env.dat' settings can be reused. The only thing you may wish to do is to do a compare between the out-of-the-box versions of the NX 5 and NX 6 files to see what, if any, differences exist and then based on that decide if you can just use of copy of the NX 5 file with NX 6 or whether it's better to just 'copy & paste' your changes from the NX 5 to the NX 6 file.

As for drafting standards, I would assume you're talking about any changes you made inside the Drafting Standards section of Customer Defaults. If so, the next item should cover that.

Customer Defaults provides a couple of things that might be of interest. First, if you wish to just get a feel for the changes made (modifications and additions) to the Customer Defaults, in NX 6, go to Customer Defaults and using the 'Find' tool, enter NX6 (no spaces) and you will get a complete list of ALL of the items that are either new or have been added for NX 6. To see more details on any particular item just select it and a short narrative will appear at the bottom of the dialog. If you 'double-click' the item, you will be taken directly to where that option is in Customer Defaults.

Now if you would like to move all of your current settings over to NX 6, go into NX 5 Customer Defaults and select the 'Mange Current Settings' option in the upper right corner of the dialog (the little eye-ball) and you will find a complete list of all of the changes that you've made. Select the 'Export Defaults' option and a file will be created which contains these changes. Now open NX 6 Customer Defaults -> Manage Current Settings and select the 'Import Defaults' option and select the file that you just created. Note that if there are any items that are either no longer valid or where there are some conflicts, you will be get a short report to that effect.

BTW, if you would ever like to save a record of your settings in something man-readable, use the 'Export all Default Data to Spreadsheet' option from the 'Manage Current Settings' dialog.

As for templates and such, your existing ones should be OK. I would copy them over (don't use a shared folder for both NX 5 and NX 6) and re-save them so that they are fully up-to-date.

Anyway, if you follow those basic procedures, you will be about as close to where you were at in NX 5 when you start using NX 6. Also, you can reuse your 'user.mtx' and/or Roles if you wish to also bring over any toolbar/menu customization. The only precaution here is that new items may have been added to some of the toolbars/menus so you should look at what customization you've done as you may wish to change thing slightly now, but the 'old' .mtx files usually work OK (at least that's I've been doing my updates for these past several releases).

Well, good luck and let us know how it goes.

With roles, is it possible to copy just a custom toolbar? I left most of the default toolbars alone, and just added one of my own that I would like to copy. I'd hate to cover up new functionality in the menus etc by bringing in a NX5 role.
