Dear All,

My name is Mohammed , I am still new to this field which is Lubricants …..

Here is my situation & what I need from you guys to recommend it to me …

All of us we know what we mean by ( Lubricant Blending Process ) which is :-

Lubricant blending process , comprises mixing different materials boiling in the lubricant boiling range to make a final homogenous product. Usually a higher viscosity lubricant will be blended with a lower viscosity lubricant to achieve a blended lubricant of intermediate viscosity.)

Here in my country – Egypt - , I have studied the Market , and I found the most required products are following :-

( 20 W 50 – SL ) – ( 5 W 30 – SN ) – ( 15 W 40 C I 4 ) – ( 15 W 40 CH 4 ) – ( 20 W 50 CH 4) –( Hydraulic 68 ) – ( CF 50 ) – ( CD 50 ).
For more information , I have the Formula for ( 20 W 50 – SL ) & let me share it with you as an example .

Because I need to know how to prepare it in the Production environment (blending Vessel) .

Base Oil ( virgin base oil ) – SN 150 = 8.5 %.
Base Oil ( virgin base oil ) – SN 500 = 75.9 %
SL/CF PACKAGE ( from Additive company called – Lubrizol ) = 6.5 %
Viscosity Index Improver ( VII ) ( from Additive company called – Lubrizol ) = 9.0 %
Pour Point depressants ( PPD ) ( from Additive company called – Lubrizol ) = 0.1 %.

Here is my question , I want to know if there is any Training I can Attend by myself to know how to prepare the product ( 20 W 50 SL ) on small scale first using digital magnetic stirrer hot plate in my Lab as first step.

As second step once I make sure the sample which I prepared is correct and it meet the requirements of ( 20 W 50 SL ) , I will Immediately implement on Big scale which is in blending vessel which is almost ( 5 Metric Tons = 5,000 LTR ) .

My question in very simple way , which one is put first , then heat to which degree , then add what else , then do what else as next ? shall I put ( SN 150 ) first , or ( SN 500 First ) and then do the blending while the heater is working & to which degree ? should be 80 degrees Celsius , or what ?

Can anyone recommend also good institute can teach me how to prepare / Implement the Products ?

I have all the required formulas , from Lubrizol & Unfortunately , I am the only one who is supervising this project .

Please advice me ASAP .

Regards,
MOHAMMED

Blending a mixture like that is a fairly easy process that is not too involved, process wise, if you have controllable heat and mixing available. You only need to maintain a batch temperature of around 104F (40C) to mix it relatively quickly to get those additives to mix. If it were me, I would do the base oils first, then the addpack, VII, and PPD in the order you list them. They are all highly miscible with one another, so the order isn't all that important, but the addpack mixes easier in a higher volume of base oil, and the other items mix a little easier with the dispersants/detergents from the addpack.

To test for the 20W-50 portion, you need something to test kinematic viscosity at 100C, a cold crank simulator, and an apparatus to test apparent viscosity at subzero temperatures according to the ASTM standards.

To test for SL compliance, you need several million dollars and a lot of research. Otherwise, Lubrizol licenses the addpack so you don't need to do that testing. If you follow their formulation and quality guidelines, you are able to assume compliance with the API specifications.
