I finally figured out how to model a cable in Abaqus. Just use a truss and set the material properties to 'no compression'. Next I need to set it up so that the cable has a desired tension at the beginning of the first step (pretension).

I know this could be worked around by making a first step that applies tension to the cable, thereby 'pretensioning' it, but the cable is fixed at either end to solid bodies that I don't want moved until a later step. Thus I need to specify a tension in the cable prior to the first step.

Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks,
Sam
