How to properly copy an assembly for FEA

Hi, I've created a complete assembly for my design in Solidworks 2010 that I would like to make a copy soley for FEA in solidworks simulation. Instead of running the simulation on the original assembly, I would like to make a copy so that I can define a few artificial surfaces to define constraints that don't exist on the actual assembly. I would also like to simplify the features of the assembly to reduce the simulation time.

I'm searching for a procedure to duplicate the assembly for only FEA along with creating duplicate parts for the FEA. I would like to make sure that if I edit the FEA versions, the original versions will remain unmodified.

Any suggestions? Happy New Years!

You might also try "Save as-->Part" to save the assembly into a single multibody part file. This will give you the freedom to add, move, and merge as needed to simplify your model.

@ TheTick... this often leads to Mesh-problems in the end... in my opinion it's best to make a new model to edit for your FEA or work with good contact-sets in your copied assembly

It doesn't have to cause trouble. I guess it depends on one's meshing habits. At any rate, there are advantages to either way.

Click 'Save as'.
Click 'References'.
Click 'More Options'.
Highlight the 'Name' column.
Add a prefix or a suffix.
Make sure 'Save all as copy' is selected.
Click 'Save All'.

This should give you a unique assembly name, as well as unique parts for said assembly.
