Hi everyone,
I'm modeling a tubular frame of three-wheeled vechicle. I have a welded prototype and I've already measured and put all important points in the model and now I would like to add new part to the model which are bent tubes which will fit the rest of parts.
I wanted to use 3D sketch and welded construction module, but is it possible to add a new part directly in assembly using 3D sketch?
When I'm trying to do so the 3D sketch icon is inactive, and I have to chose the plane to start normal 2D sketch.
I've used welded construction module before, but never directly in assembly.
I would be grateful for any advice.
Thank you.

If you want to create it in the assembly, first you have to insert a new part in the assembly, rename it FRAME, then click EDIT PART. Everything else goes transparent. You are "in" that part. You can place points wherever you want using relations to the other components, then use 3D sketch to draw the sketch elements of your frame weldment.

Start like Jboggs says...

THEN...

DO NOT use the assembly-level 3D sketch for directly making features. Make a copy of the 3D sketch in the part using "Convert Entities"., then use that 3D sketch to generate geometry.

It takes just a little extra time, but your parts will be more able to handle change. Also, you will be able to see context of part without opening full assembly.

MateuszM,

Do you have an orthogonal corner to fix your frame to? If so, you can create a part, create a 3D[ ]sketch, and create a welded space frame. You can insert this into your assembly, and then make everything fit.

Thank you all, I've menage to solve this problem in a bit another way, but I think I've used a bit of all your suggestions. I've just started a new 3D sketch in assembly level, then just coppied it and placed in a new part. Then i' ve just used welded construction and placed it in the assembly. Works fine, only cosmetic work to be done yet and it's ready.
Best Regards.

If you build a part model of your design, then you can convert the edges to a 3dSketch within the part and then you can use weldments. I wouldn't build a weldment in an assembly, I would do in a part only, its how I build all my weldments at my current job.
