How to use low pass filter in the time series of tide ?

Hi I am a time series of water surface elevation at the coastal region. I want to use the low pass filter in the time series of the tide but I don't know how to use the low pass filter. Has anyone used low pass filter before or knows how to perform the analysis using low pass filter ? Please give me some suggestions or refer any paper / information about the low pass filter.
