How to use project files properly 1

Hi, I am new to Inv 8 pro, in my previous thread i asked for some advise on how (where) to reload a saved project file into a new (re-install of Inv 8 pro)(new H. drive installed) , although i am managing to get working using tutorials and an autodesk press essentials book with interactive cd's, i seem to be struggling with the project setup, and i don't think i am on my own in this problem from what i am reading in other forum's, i would appreciate any guidance from any one.

Another option: Have you looked at Vault? It adds a lot more versatility to your file management.

NOTE: Project file have changed a bit in R9...and probably even more in R10 so I would not spend a tremendous amount of time with them. I think everything will be controlled with Vault in the future.

Its just this file storing setup that i would like to understand, i can use the project setup once everything is installed & running, but no one has replied to my question about reinstalling a saved file back into inventor 8 pro, demystifying project files doesnt work for me i am afraid, i have read it several times & it doen't click, i am really impressed with Inventor, and i intend to press on, and any information to help things click easier is greatly appreciated.

If you are running R9, you will not be able to open those files in R8.

Are you running single user, semi-isolated, or shared projects?

BASICALLY, the project workspace is where Inventor tries to store the files you are working on in that project, and any libraries that you asign to a project is where it will look for components for that project (like hardware or fittings). You can NOT edit any of the library files of a project when working within that project.

I never use shared or semi-isolated projects, so not much help there. I know you have to check parts out, and in so two people don't try to modify the same part at the same time etc...but I'm a one-man department so I don't have to worry about that.

If you are just getting started, you should go to Vault. It is much simpler, and far more powerful.

Yes I am just getting started, also single user, i started off by redoing an acad 2002 3D layout in inv 8 pro its 57 mb in size, the difference is most significant, (i in fact enjoyed doing it) i would like to consider using only inventor, the ability to redo your models and modify again & again makes a tremendous difference along with many other reasons,for instance it took me a long time to get up to speed with (3D Acad) But i am moving along much faster now with inventor, i have tried SW & Pro eng, but neither compare for ease of use, i even went on a SW course for one company that paid for it, are you saying that R8 files wont open in R 9, or is R9 not backwards compatible at all, A lot of people told me inventor is only useful for designing single components, but i have found that to be not so, i have been doing process tanks, pipework pumping system layouts with R8. I will take your advise on vault, once i am happy with how the file systems work i can then move on with the programme itself with more confidence, thanks amsmarle

Sounds like we do a lot of similar designs. I do mostly sanitary systems. Some plant work with tanks / pumps / structural, and some skid work....and the odd contraption that has no description. What type of piping are you working with? (may be able to offer some parts)

No backward compatibility at all (you can open R8 files with R9, but not R9 files with R8)

Have you been using the piping module in Pro, or just i-parts?

DesignerMike, last project which i have used for inventor trial was AISI-316 SMS spec, can't find parts for SMS so made own from PDF spec sheets,( this would have taken ages in acad 3d) can't find pipe 1.7 wall either, i have tried out piping module it seems mostly for screwed system at the moment. Most frequent use for my sons business is welded pipe systems s o / w n flanges, BW elbows etc. I have Installed Vault but cannot open vault?, in the tutorial "Vault for autodesk Inventor overview" step 1: opening vault, it asks for enter vault server (wont accept computer name or ip address, vault database: i keep as "vault", i enter user name, i dont use a password on my machine, i keep getting "class not registered" can't get any further

I haven't started using Vault at work yet, but I have a couple friends that are happy with it, and I plan on implimenting it after the holidays. (if I ever get the time) So I'm not sure what the install process is like.

almost everything I do is sanitary welded tube (the library has nothing) so I had to publish all my own parts and styles (which is not very user-friendly)
