HSS Columns Embedded Into Concrete Wall

I found the above-referenced thread extremely helpful while trying to analyze HSS columns into concrete retaining wall. “Ron” posted this handy diagram:


Pertaining to Ron’s diagram, I am confused why the stress distribution area is 1/3 E(d) instead of 1/2 E(d). Aren’t we looking for the area of the triangle in this part and then applying the resultant (per unit length) at 1/3?

In my particular case, the HSS is in a concrete wall and the moment induced on the HSS is lateral to a wall. So I need to ensure the concrete “coverage” on the compression side of the HSS is adequate. Once I determine the stress distribution from Ron’s example, should I treat the result as a triangular load on a cantilever beam to determine the thickness of the wall between the HSS and edge of wall?

I believe only the portion of the stress triangle below the decoupled load on the right side is in compression. Thus only 1/3 of the triangular stress block is used.

All I know is P/A and Mc/I
