Working on a steel frame and want to do HSS to HSS moment frame. Was thinking moment end plate connections, and use the Lindapter HB Hollo-bolt.

I want to make it a bit easier than doing field welds. My thought would be add a face plate with pre-drilled holes on the column, match up the end plate from the beam and install the Hollo-bolt.

I have not looked at AISC manual yet to see if leagal, just wanted to see if a stupid idea from the get go.

Thanks

I'm not sure how blind bolts do with pre-tensioning. You'd likely have to look to the manufacturer for testing data there.

If eliminating field welding is the primary goal, what about something like this:

PhamENG,
Will check out their literature on using them.

I thought about that, or a version where the plate was wider than the HSS section, and just bolted thru on the sides. Not sure how either will pass with the architect, as these are exposed frames.

Thanks

Lindapter has very good technical support and I attended a webinar from them in February. I'll quote their Email verbatim.

Fair enough - architects do like to say not to efficient connections...

Couldn't find anything on Lindapter, and Blind Bolt (didn't realize that was a name brand) specifically says it should not be used for pre-loaded assemblies.

This one looks interesting. The first few pictures make it look like its not what you're after, but stick with it to the illustrated installation instructions. Pretty spiffy. NexGen2 Blind Bolt Assembly

Go with the welded stub like phamENG shows then add a splice per castconnex or similar.

JStructsteel:
If you look at PhamENG’s sketch, and you move the beam moment connection to the right a foot or two, you probably end up in a very low moment region on the beam, and reasonable shear, making that connection lighter and more manageable. You end up with all shop welded column which is still very easily shipped, with he 2-3' canti. beam appendages, and a couple shim plates make up any erection tolerances. One of the problems with blind bolts is that you still have to reach down into the column to start to install them or place them. Huckbolts are another form a blind bolts, fixed from one end only. You have to burn them off for removal.
