HSS Diaphragm Plate Connection

I am trying to figure out what the 'ws' variable is in the HSS Diaphragm Plate Connection Figure 12-22 on page 12-27 of the AISC Manual (13th Ed.) It doesn't seem to be defined anywhere else in the manual.

Is this just the distance from the edge of the cut out to the edge/corner of the diaphragm plate?

Yes, that's what it appears to be.

Thanks, any idea where i might be able to find something that will define that?...i'm surprised that the manual doesn't define it anywhere...or is that because it is assumed to be obvious from the figure? I've only found ws to be the size of fillet weld or col stiffener width in other sources...

You'll calculate the minimum ws dimension required based on tension/compression on the diaphragm plate, at the face of the HSS column, where the cut-out for the column begins. Then, it appears that for detailing convention, this dimension should also be projected the other direction, parallel to the beam centerline, to determine when you can start trimming the diaphragm plate.

I don't see this connection discussed in the new AISC Design Guide 24, which deals with HSS connections. However, it is discussed in the old black HSS Connections Manual.

Just revisiting this discussion and the question I would add when looking at Figure 12-22 is, why is there a shear plate on only one side of the connection? It would seem that there should be one on each side just to "balance" the connection. Any thoughts?
