HSS vs TS 1

Once I read an article about the difference between HSS's and TS's. The problem is I can't remember where the article is and what the answer is. Can someone remind me of the difference please.

There is no difference between HSS and TS. The HSS in the new(er)designation for tubes. HSS designates hollow structural section while TS designates Tube shape.

If you plan on using HSS (or TS) in design, you should use the design properties in the LRDF V3 or the Hollow Structural Section Connection Manual. The properties listed in the ASD 9th Ed are approximately 10% higher. The discrepancy is due to the fact that the HSS manufactueres can be underthickness approximately 10% and still be within the allowable tolerance.

Like CSEIIc said, be sure to use the properties in LRFD V3. The walls are thinner for HSS than for TS.
