whats the best place to find a HV power supply

output 100KV DC at about 10-30 Watts

are there any step up transformers for DC

Transformers don't work for DC.

Glassman are an old established manufacturer of EHV power supplies, but there are dozens of others if you search on Google.

These PSU's turn up from time to time on the surplus market too.

what about rectifier transformers

also i have heard about voltage multipliers, what are those?
 
If you want to start with DC and generate a high voltage DC then you need a oscillating or switching circuit inbetween to drive a transformer and/or a voltage multiplier circuit. Voltage mulitpliers are an array of diodes and capacitors that take a AC input and create a high voltage DC output.

Modules to take 12 to 24 VDC and step it up to ~8000 VDC are fairly common for powering photomultiplier tubes or CRTs. Creating more than 50kVDC begins to get a little unusual. Above 200kVDC you're in the Van De Graf generators.

Hi guys....My first share....Q. for Jag27: Is th supply u need, have to be variable?? or is it steady @ 100KV..I am using EMCO high voltage modules which "Comcokid" is mentioning abt...it drains 12v/500mA to produce 450V /8mA.In my case the whole supply has to be varible depending upon the code from uC.....Voltage multipliers didn't work for me since they do not offer me the flexibility of voltage variation in analog way.....Depending upon the requirement, yr design can simplify or complicate...

I apologise scottyUK...I will take care next time i post and thank you for bringing the situation to my notice...i can understand the frustration but couldn't realise the problem it would be causing to other people....

Hi jag27, In your case, the most practicle method of achieving this would be using an EHT (Extra High tension) transformer also known as flyback transformer used to generate high voltage in the range of 7Kv to 30Kv (incase u don;t know). And at the boosted +B (secondary side) use voltage multiplier configuration to push the supply from around 25Kv to 100Kv. The supply voltage & current required for switching transistor at primary side of EHT should be around around 35W and above. Keep the supply voltage for switching transistor as high as possible to avoid heating of power transistor or use ultra low-ON resistance MOSFET..like IRF640 or similar...The frequency required for switching will be in the range of 13KHz to 35KHz depending upon what EHT you use.. ....Feel free to drop back if more info is needed....
