I know that in 2000, Romer introduced a hybrid articulated arm CMM that was mounted on a linear rail, to facilitate the measurement of large parts, but I can not seem to find any info on anything like this.

A CMM of this type would be ideal for us. We need to inspect parts that can be fairly long...up to 130". Other than the length, the required working area is not that large. Ideally, taking something like a Faro Multi Gage, Small Faro Arm, Romer Multi Gage, or other small arm, and mounting in on a linear axis would be ideal. Add a high accuracy (.0001" resolution) linear encoder to the linear, and now you have a VERY accurate system for measuring large parts, that are long in nature.

Of course, the software would have to be configured to deal with this extra linear axis. Mathematically, however...that would be VERY easy. The easiest was would be to use flat ways, and actually use the slide ways in the alignment routine.

Is there anything out there like this?
