Hello!

I'm currently designing a hydraulic jack and got stuck in the Piston thickness definition. I would appreciate if someone could guide me on what formulas should I use to avoid shear fracture on the piston.

What I have at the moment:

Load on the Piston Rod = 295 kN
Piston Rod Diameter = 55 mm
Outside diameter of the piston = 90 mm
Work pressure of the system = 48 MPa
Yield Strengh of the Material = 550 Mpa
Tensile Strengh of the Material = 650 Mpa
Safety factor = 3

Thanks in advance.

You also need to know the shear strength of your material. This (both Ultimate and Yield) is often significantly different to the corresponding Tensile strength - but both sign and magnitude of that difference depend on the material.
