hydraulic pump HP requirements

Can anyone give me or direct me to useful formulae to calculate req'd horsepower for gpm and pressure?
This would be to size an internal-combustion engine to an (approximately) 22gpm 2-stage pump to run at 2500 to 3000 psi. Yes, this is for a log splitter.
Seems there are wide variations on these numbers from the people that sell pumps and those that sell engines.

Seems to me ( and its been a while since I worked in hydraulics) that a ROT was 20gpm @1000 psi required 1 hp
another quick way- (flow x pressure)/1714 = HP
(if you know the effieciency multiply that by 1714 then didvide)

This will work for you
BHP = [Q x H x SG] / [3960 x Eff]
Q = rate in GPM
H = Head in FT
SG = specific gravity of pumped fluid
Eff = efficiency of the pump

Be sure to use the continuous power out put for the engine not the break or intermittent output. Most manufactures have 2 ratings for each engine.
