Can someone please point me in the direction of a standard for hydraulic "burst" testing to be used with a hydraulic ram design?

Requirements call for a 4X 'burst test'- with no references given.

what qualifies passing or failure?
-metal yield?
-seal extrusion?
-seal leakage?
-complete rupture of the cylinder or heads?

There are different opinions as to test procedure. We have seen an example of a 5 minute hold with pressure monitoring, but my feeling is that that the hold time is excessive for a 4X test.

all opinions welcome.

This is what I got looking through a report. No reference to a standard or specification, though. I'm in Aerospace so the specs are probably going to be different, anyway. Typical pressures are usually from 2.5x working pressure to 4x working pressure. It all depends on what kind of component the test is being done on.

...requires a burst pressure of xxxx psi
be applied to the component for a minimum of one minute and then held for one minute. The fluid temperature shall be maximum rated at a maximum rate of increase of
25,000 psi per second.

Success Criteria
Distortion or permanent set may occur; however, neither the internal nor the external components
may rupture nor shall external leakage be evident. There shall be no evidence of structural
failure.

MIL-STD-1522A STANDARD GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF PRESSURIZED MISSILE AND SPACE SYSTEMS. It requires 4X for ground systems.
