Hi

I would like to ask for hydrodynamic bearings,
1. Is forced lubrication system always required?
2. If not mandatory, is there any requirement(s) in code and standard addressing when forced lubrication system is required for bearings?
3. If no requirement from code and standard, why are typical factors considered by equipment/bearing manufacturer when forced lubrication system should be used?

Thank you.

1. No. Most of our machines that use hydrodynamic bearings, and do not have pressurized, forced feed lubrication. Most of them have sumps and oil rings.
2. If a machine was build to API special purpose specifications, it would have pressurized lube oil. If it was built to API general purpose specifications, it might have oil ring lubrication.
3. Size, speed, criticality, bearing load, number of starts per day.

1. Forced lubrication system is not mandatory for all cases.
2. There is no general codes and standards. But API 614 provide some guidelines for refinery and allied services.
3. Main factors are:
-Type of application- For example due to restriction in space and weight, roller bearings are preferred for aircraft application.
-For stationary applications journal/tilting pad bearings are preferred when speed and loads are high and high bearing life (>100,000 h)is expected.

Engineers, think what we have done to the environment !
