Can anyone suggest a specific material specification for a hydrogen storage vessel - 24" diameter carbon steel 580psig -40F to 144F ASME Section VIII, Div. 1

SA 516GR70? SA333GR1? - Impact tested per material specification

Vessel is in cyclic service - 88000 0 to full pressure cycles over 20 years service.

Hydrogen embrittlment Concern?

Is radiography a code requirement?

Thanks in advance.

Any help would be appreciated

Reply; What are your impact test requirements for the vessel. What is the minimum design metal temperature? Answers to these questions will dictate material selection.

Is radiography a code requirement?

Reply: You need to follow the design requirements in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Div 1.

Thank you for the quick response.

Minimum design temperaure is minus(-)40F.

The two materials I mentioned would be impact tsted per material specification requirements at minus(-)50 F.

Vessel is in cyclic operation - 88,000 fill and empty pressure cycles from 0 psig to 580 psig over its lifetime. I would use a stress range reduction factor of f = 0.6 in addition to any joint efficiency factor E based on the extent of radiography performed in the design.

My primary question is - did I select an appropriate carbon steel grade of material for the application? Are there other specifications and grades of carbon steel that are more commonly used for hydrogen storage vessels?

Thanks

The SA 333 Grade 1 material is acceptable based on your MDMT.
