I am working for a package machine

I am working for a package machine company to do an drawing filse translation evaluation from Mechanical Desktop to Solidworks2001 and Inventor5 to help they make decision switch to which software is good for them. During the evaluation, I found after translated to SW, in assembly file, the parts lost constrains. I would like to know how to fix the problem and want to hear more experience.

So let's see if I follow you.

You have some Drawing files that are in MDT and your exporting them to SW01 and to Inv5. Then your trying to determine which one is better for you?

The Assembly file I assume is a bunch a models of different parts, or does it come over as a single part, or a joined assembly file?

What happens when you bring that same file into Inv5?

It is a large assembly file with subassembly. In Inv5, the translation is easy than SW and the constrains still in there except the spring, but the shape is not as good as SW and crash with larger file.

Athough the SW translation is very difficult to operate, it brought in larger assemblies without crash. But their constrains were lost, along with all drawing views and additional information.

In both SW and Inv5, each assembly translatio re-translates the component parts. Is there a effectively and efficiently
way to tranlate the drawing files.

The compamy's major need is to be able to reference or insert individual part files into a large number of assemblies and have the automatic Bill of Materials generated in each assembly to be accurate and reliable.

I think what is happening (I can't say for sure without seeing it) but I think the problem is that the MDT files are coming in as dumb solids. I that would be consistent with lose of mates. But without having a MDT assembly file handy and seeing it for myself, I'm unsure.

How complicated are these parts and assemblies?

If the parts are basic it would easier to just make them in SW rather than importing them in. It may take longer, but your result in the end is a lot better. You will have the BOM and all the associatively you shake a stick at.

If you can send me small MDT assembly so I can see what your seeing.

Do you have MDT on your computer. If so there is a translator built in under the Tools Add-Ins called SolidWorks MDT. It does require you to have MDT installed on you machime. I have never used it so i am not at all familiar with it. From what I remember hearing it receates the MDT parts to full functional SW parts. I am not sure, whether or not, if it handles assemblies either. BBJT CSWP
