Does anyone have any experience of importing I-DEAS files into UG NX2 and then back to I-DEAS without using translators?

I've heard this can be done but I cannot trial it just now.

for UG to I-DEAS:
1. file
2.Unigraphics open
But u should have all your piece parts in the same directory because IDEAS does not search directories for UG files.

for I-DEAS to UG:
you will make I-DEAS exchange package file (.xpk) and in UG go to file-open-Files of type-select:
I-DEAS exchange package file

The IDEAS-UG Interoperability scheme is not really setup for the round trip you describe IDEAS to UG back to IDEAS (or UG to IDEAS back to UG).

What they envision is an IDEAS User wanting to do Machining in UGNX, for example (or UGNX User wanting to do FEA in IDEAS). From IDEAS you export the .xpk file and open it in UGNX. You can't modify the IDEAS history, but you can view it. If some modification to the part is needed for machining, and can be added to the end of the part history, it can be done in UGNX. You can then do your Toolpaths.

If an underlying change to the part is needed, the intention is to use IDEAS to make the change. Then re-export the .xpk file. In UGNX2, you then update the part to the new .xpk file. It is even associative, in that the UGNX2 changes added to the end of the history will then update. And your Toolpaths will also update.

Yes I agree from documentation interoperability is not set up for round trip. If you want to bring the file back to I-DEAS which is where you started, it will be a new part and you should give it a new part number.

Hi,

Is it possible to get the history of the I-deas .xpk file once it is open in UGNX ?

My company has the I-DEAS and UG at the same time.

I have tried several ways, like parasolid,IGS and package file etc.I feel the best way to do that is using the EDS tool called "ug_ideas_connector". You will able to see the I-deas library in UG and check out part in UG.You can even see the I-deas part history tree.

It works as following:

1. you need to add a new enviroment variable into you local computer. Var Name "UGII_INOP_SERVER_HOST" and Var value "%COMPUTERNAME%".

2.The command for your I-deas launch would be "?:\EDS\I-DEAS10\bin\I-DEASOGL.cmd -e oaxx execute %SDRC_INSTL%\UGS\ug_ideas_connector.exe". It will start the connector right after I-deas started.

3. Now start you UG(do not close I-deas). you will find a new menu in UG file->open I-deas. Choose that, take a while to connect i-deas library. Then you will see the whole lib. Do as you do in I-deas.

hope this will help.

Thanks frankzheng,

I doubt my question was not clear.
If a parasolid or step file is imported into UG,it becomes like an unparametric.
My question: Is there any way to export from i-deas and import into UG with all its history in place so that we can change or modify its features in UG as we do a UG .prt file.I am using only UG NX.If this is possible I can direct my customers for that...

Any experts please..

Thanks

Not directly with any product sold be UGS PLM. There may be some third party translators that can bring over features. Try Translation Technologies, Theorum or Elysim.

geo12,
You can't modify the history with the current version of the program, UGNX2, even with the best method of exchange -the .xpk file. What UGS intends that if you need to modify the part, you go back to I-DEAS to do it. Then you re-export the new .xpk file and update the part in UGNX. It is a fully associative change, i.e. if you have toolpaths, they update. The reverse is also true - modify the original part in UGNX and update in IDEAS with associativity.

I was at the recent PLMWorld conference and they demonstrated UGNX3 - which is not released to the public yet. It is the first version that, if you really wanted to, you COULD completely migrate to UGNX3 from I-DEAS The parts are fully modifiable, same with assemblies. It is more complicated than just exporting a part from IDEAS and importing to UGNX with history. There are a series of steps, but it can be done. You'll need to contact your UGS-PLM rep or your VAR to get all the details.

Thanks MadMatt2 for your valuable information
and thanks all of you
