I have a topic just for fun. My friend believes that a car exhaust system rusts (and fails) mostly from the outside in. I think it rusts from the inside out and then fails. As a result, he paints his exhaust system with high temperature paint to inhibit corrosion.

Any ideas, comments?? C. Hugh (

Your right. Corrodes from inside out. Combustion gasses going through the cat converter turn into CO, water, Co2, and some others. Put them all together inside your muffler and its a pretty nasty soup. Most good quality mufflers are stainless or at least galvanized so painting wont do a thing.
