I have prepared a TDC for ASTM A105 forged bar. Vendor has supplied material in hot rolled condition. My questions are:
1. Are forging and rolling the same operations?
2. Should the material be accepted in rolled condition?

Nars will be machined into forged fittings. Code of construction is ASME B31.1 Non BEP.

1. Are forging and rolling the same operations?

No. A 105 is very clear regarding forging.

2. Should the material be accepted in rolled condition?

No, you required a forging under material specification A 105. You were supplied hot rolled bar. Review
ASTM A 788 for further information related to forgings and general requirements.

metengr,

Thankyou so much for the explanation. However I am confused as definition of steel forging as per SA788 allows plastic working with a ring rolling machine also.

Ring rolling is a form of work reduction that is like forging rings. This is not what you have as far as product form.

forging and hot rolling are not exactly the same, but both are hot working, forging is for ingot/billet cogging and larger bar, while hot rolling is for production of smaller bar, wire, and strip. All equal, hot rolling is often better in control of temperature and structure, say getting more uniform structure.

Disagree. The work reduction and grain flow pattern in forging is more desirable than a rolled product formed where you have directionality or banding.

That's true not everything in hot roll is better than forging, such as directional structure. But as a whole, I prefer hot rolling, the main reasons being that hot rolling offers more uniform deformation and better temperature control.
