I want to model a relatively simple 2D surcharge condition onto an existing soil layer, which I can do by hand...however, I need to show PRINCIPAL STRESSES in a 2D model for a specific geometry. Recommendations for a low-cost FEM software that has soil models and can produce principal stress plots would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Platforms such as CRISP & PLAXIS are too expensive of an investment for this relatively simple problem.

Try finding someone who already owns the expensive program to run it for you (you give them the input and then check the output). Or, try to find a website where the program you need is available for your use at an hourly or daily rate.

There is an inexpensive program called PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS for Geotechnical Engineers developed by Prototype Engineering, Inc. in Massachusetts Tel No. is 781-729-2363.

Good Luck

Sigma from GEOslope can do this but it is about $1500 US

do PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS have a web site?
