Hi pals

I have been designing and analyzing for years now, but never tried nonlinear analysis. Seems like I will have to use it now that we have to specify seismic isolators etc.

so please do offer some basics etc or even recommend a text or a website.

Respects

Chopra, Prentice & hall, Dynamics of Structures is a very good book for dynamic analysis of buildings structures, and nonlinear analysis is contemplated.

I understood it quite well when I read it, and this is quite an accomplishment for the author since I have been being as well one only statics, elastic plus p-delta designer at much. However for practical use the best thing must be reading well the manuals of the able package, such SAP2000.

The thing in the end for those that know is to select what best and keep order, this one life. We have other. We design buildings (I am an architect in Spain, where we are by law enactment the structural engineer as well except by other overtaking) and have to do efficiently...till now nonlinear analysis has been unused, but the trend is to use it for the more complicated things "since it is out there".

I'd recommend Anil Chopra(dynamics of Structures). In chapter 20 refers to base isolation and has several examples. Also you can find very useful articles in ASCE about base isolation and base isolation retrofit.
About software SAP2000 nonlinear has extended capabilities on base isolation but i'd recommend 3d-Basis which is very accurate.
