I need a benchmark/reference to compare actual rusted carbon steel pipe in order to assess its degree of deterioration.

I have seen some marine surveyors carrying some laminated photos with ratings which they use to compare to the actual material being evaluated.

FYI - I was not able to find anything neither at NACE nor at ABS.

I hope one of you can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!!

Metman - I looked around in the ASTM site and eventhough there is extensive info. I still could not find what I was looking for...basically I'm looking for photos of rust/corroded surfaces with a rating so I can compare to actual specimens and visually determine the degree of deterioration.

Keep in mind that we are going to do this in a pipe yard as a rule of thumb no lab tests.

Anyone else?

There are ongoing and have been long term atmospheric corrosion tests at numerous sites. Corrosion rates are highly dependent on location; e.g., industrial, rural, marine, desert marine, tropical marine, etc.

Google "atmospheric corrosion test results" and a wealth of material can be found. Also the ASM Corrosion Handbook provides a wealth of info.

Ron - I think that is just what I need it. Thanks to you and all others that chimed into the thread. Case closed.
