Hi all,

Does anyone know what the IEEE median life expectancy of a motor control center is?? Let's just assume normal useage and maintenance.

Thanks,

Mike

There is no median life definition of MCCs in IEEE or any other standards for that matter. The purchaser/specifier do however quote a usefull working life with spares availability of 30 years which seems normal practice.

Chapters 3 & 4 of IEEE Std 493-1997 …Design of Reliable Industrial and Commercial Power Systems {gold book} may have applicable information.

About 20 years ago, I worked on a project where the Square D MCC's were to be replaced, not because they were damaged or worn out, but because they were made in the early 1940's and Square D didn't have replacement parts. There was a need for new starter buckets, but they weren't available to fit these MCC's. Some of the overloads needed replacing, but none were available. The starters that were in use had good heavy duty contacts, etc. I doubt that the new generations of MCC's will be around as long as those were.
