Importing a STEP file into a SE assembly

Hi all,

I am trying to open a STEP file in SE ST2, but when I open it using a traditional or syncronous assembly template the file opens up with no geometry. I can open the STEP file using a traditional part template and it works fine. Is it not possible to open a STEP file using an assembly template?

Here is an image of the pathfinder. My goal is to transfer all of these part copy files into an assembly. Can this be done?

It is coming in as surfaces and visibility is not turned on by default in the assembly environment.
Right-click and select hide/show and select surfaces.

When it opens in the assembly there is nothing in the pathfinder. The only thing that shows up is the reference planes. It goes through the motions like it is importing all of the data, but nothing actually comes into the assembly file. Any other reasons why this would not work? Thanks for the sugestion though.

Do you still have your original default templates in place? If you've deleted them SE won't be able to do the conversion properly because he's looking for is own template files. At least that was the case with V20 if I'm not mistaken.

What are you importing?
Was it an assembly or a single part?

The part copy files will just be individual faces of the model you are importing. You are getting surfaces because SE can't create a solid for you. This typically happens because there are gaps in the surfaces.
In the converted (part) file you should be able to stitch some or all of surfaces together to form a solid. You might then need to do some work to add the remaining solid using protrusions etc.
This is when I use synchronous, because once you have the solid form you can usually delete all the part-copy surfaces.
Just noticed you are using ST2, so do the work in traditional then convert it to sync.

What CAD system did it come from?
Many can save as Parasolid and this would be my first option for conversion because you should be able to get the assembly structure.
STEP would only be my second choice.

The STEP file was originally an assembly saved out by the customer. I downloaded a trial of ST4 and tried to open the STEP file in a SE assembly template and it opened fine, so I am thinking it is either an ST2 conversion issue or just the license that I have for ST2. I just have the base license for ST2 which may be the issue. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
