The .dat file suffix is pretty generic, I don't think there is any standard for what a .dat file contains or how it is formatted. Can you be more specific as to what you are trying to import?

hi cowski
I am trying to import a set of data points into NX3. The file would contain X and Y coordinates of a required shape.

thanks

Yes, it is possible. The spline creation operation has an option for -> through points -> points from file. The file would be a .dat file.

If the data was intended to represent a surface, as long as the file is formatted as if the points defined a series of section curves that the surface would pass through, there is also an option in the Surface Through Points function to use a .dat file as input.
