Importing large STEP file

I am having a problem importing relatively large STEP files from ProE. The file that I am trying to import is a large assembly about 140mb STEP. When I try to import the file it gives a smart heap memory error. When I started I was using an old machine 1.4 GHz P4 1.5 GB ram Win 2000, I have since loaded IDEAS onto a brand new Dell 380 3.8 GHz with 2.0 GB ram and XP. I get basically the same results on both machines, on the 380 the task manager shows 1.7 GB of memory used after about 1.5 hrs when the error occurs. We tried manually configuring IDEAS memory manager and got the same result. The same STEP file will open in NX3 in about 20 min.

I am primarily a ProE user I only use IDEAS to communicate with our customer. In the past we have sent them STEP files and they converted them, but now we are going to have to do all of the conversion at our end. Any tips on conversion of large files would be very helpful, in the future we will need to convert their files to ProE and they will be as large or larger.

There doesn't sound like there's much you can do to get the file directly into I-DEAS.

It's not ideal, but as you've got it into NX3, how about using the I-DEAS Interoperability to pull the UG file into I-DEAS. (I assume you have I-DEAS 10 or 11)
