In SVC Thyristor Switched Capacitor TSC but not Controlled Capacitor? 2

Hi,

As you know the Static Var Compensator SVC consists of branches TCR, TSC and Filters.

Can anyone give explanation why we can't do a smooth controlling in capacitors instead of fully conducting or fully off?

Capacitors don't do partial cycles very well, but the reactors don't much care about partial cycles.

I can do that.

If you connect a capacitor to a voltage, you get a very high current surge that gets worse the higher the voltage is and the more power there is behind the voltage (low impedance, that is).

So, you have to be very careful and switch the capacitors very close to the voltage's zero crossing. Anything else will cause problems, destruction,ringing, transient overvoltages and other problems.
