I'm only on the fringe of this situation, and it isn't an area I normally get involved in. A vendor has recommended an inconel X-750 spring in a metering pump check valve for chlorine dioxide service. This is to be installed in a location with very awkward access, so we don't want to be buying something that's going to be a maintenance headache. Any problems with inconel in this service?

What is the operating temperature? Will any moisture be present?

The operating temp is amibient. I'm not sure about moisture. Is there a range to be avoided?

I was given incorrect info - the operating temp range is between 205*F and 275*F.

Inconel 600 is not recommended for use in chlorine dioxide service(0.5% at 36°F, & 8-12% at 150°F). If I were you I'd avoid using it, so you don't have to fight the maintenance headache. Hope that helps.

Is there a material that would be more suitable? Thanks for your help.

It's your temperature range that I'm worried about. Aluminum is good to 70°F, but anything over that would be a guess.

Titanium as a base material is recommended in chlorine-containing environments (including chlorine dioxide) due to the presence of a stable, passive oxide film. The proprietary alloy TIMETAL 15-3 from TIMET is available in high strength strip. If the spring requires bar/wire, then Ti-3-8-6-4 (also called Beta-C) is the most common alloy for springs. TIMET and Dynamet, part of Carpenter Technology, are leading suppliers of Ti materials and Renton Coil Spring is a leader vendor of titanium springs.
