I am also looking for design information on firetube heaters. Not necessarily firetube boilers, but what are normally called indirect fired heaters. These use a firetube to heat water or glycol. A coil is suspended in the water or glycol and a second fluid is heated in the coil. I am chiefly looking for software but just any info on how to design the heater would help. API has a specification on it, 12K I believe, but it doesn't go into much detail on how to calculate the heat transfer.

The British standard for fire tube heaters BS2750 (I think that is the number) and our Australian code AS1228 both contain appendixes for tube sheet temperature calculations. In the reference section for the appendix it calls up literature that conations 1st principal calculation methods for fire tube type heaters. I have used these methods to write software in mathcad for the design of these types of heaters for both direct fired steam types and indirect API12K types. Unfortunately there is no short cut and you will most likely have to write your own as most programs will be proprietary information as is the one I have written. I am not shore if I have helped but if can email any papers please advise on this thread.

Thank you so much for your reply. Do you have a source where I can find the British standard or the Australian code? Are they available on the internet? I hate to put you to the trouble of sending me these. I can write my own program if I can find the relevant design information.
Thanks again for your help.

If you can supply me you email address I could email the appendix refs and the design papers I have.

Hi,

sorry to bother you but I'm also looking for the same information!

thanks!

Hi 2277q,
I have spent the last few years working at making thermal design methods available and understandable to new engineers. If you receive the formulas and correlations necessary to thermally rate this equipment and you provide it to me, I will put it in a JavaScript that anyone can use with their browser, and at no cost to anyone. I currently am working on the following sites:

Waste Heat Boiler and HRSG design at Steam Hydrocarbon Reformers at Thermal Fluid Heaters at Thanks,
