Inductance Displacement

I am basically a mechanical engineer and just started to work on ignition coils for automotive applications. Can anybody explain to me how inductance displacement works? Thank you.

I do not think that there is such an animal. Do you mean magnetostriction? Or, perhaps, an inductive displacement transducer?
