Industrial Lighting Standards

I'm working on installing an assembly operation in an existing building and I'm trying to determine how much workstation lighting would be sufficient. Does anyone have any standards/guidelines on how to determine what is the adequate amount of light?

I have a copy of the Lighting Handbook 8th ed. from IES (Illuminating Engineering Society), which has plenty of information that can help you. The foot candles (or Lux depending on your units) are broken down by Industry, area, and activity. For example, for the Pulp and Paper Industry a illuminance value of 50 fc should be on the paper mill machine room if the machine used is a roll dryer.
You can consult this volume and seach for you specific application.

The IES revised its illuminance standards for the 9th edition of their handbook. You might want to consult a copy of that. They also have published a Recommended Practice for Industrial Lighting that is considerably cheaper if you want to buy it.
