Depends on the type of sprinkler, see NFPA 13, 2002, chapter 8.6.5 on obstructions.

Would say four inches, and you should be ok.

What is the real question???

If the sprinkler head is heat actuated and the system is tied into the fire alarm monitoring system, there is most likely no code required reason to install a smoke detector in that area of coverage.

What is your specific application?

Would disagree with this comment there could be numerous reasons to have smoke detectors in an area with sprinkler coverage to include to activate it such as in a preaction system.
