I have True-Stress vs True-Strain data from tensile test experiments. this data has more than thousand points(x,y) to totally define the stress-strain curve starting with the initial linear elastic response followd by plasticity (hardening) till necking.

Now the questions are

(1) Do i need to input all this data in to the plasticity model availabe in CAE or just the data starting from non linear response?
(2) Is there a way to import this data (from excel or text file) if i neeed to input all the points ?
(3) Can i define this curve by picking a few points (about 20) so that the shape of the curve is still close?

Any help is geatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nodal

Typical approachs consist of a bilinear or trilinear model, meaning two or the linear lines to approximate the curve.

You can put it as many data points as you like, but going beyond a trilinear model proabaly won't affect the result too much. In short, I would just make a piecewise linear model that best fits the data. I can't answer how many lines that you feel are adequate to approximate your curve, but if you are using more than a handful you are probably just wasting time. The raw data from the test is just that, raw. It's up to you to digest it for FEM use.
