I hope this message finds you well.

I'm writing to inquire about the pressure relief devices used in our mine pipe wash pipeline for the phosphate slurry transfer. I understand that both rupture discs and pressure relief valves (PRVs) are employed for protection purposes.

Our pipeline system is divided into two main sections:

Mine Plant:

Water process pipeline
Slurry storage tank
Slurry transfer pipeline

Wash Plant:

Water process pipeline
Slurry storage tank
Slurry transfer pipeline

My question is: Why are rupture discs and pressure relief valves used only on the slurry pipeline transfer between storage tank in mine plant and storage tank in wash plant side and not used throughout the entire system (including the mine and wash plant)?

Very difficult to tell from a snapshot of the p and id, without knowing pressures, temperatures, flow rates, design pressure etc

Maybe those lines are the only ones which can overpressure or have locked in sections?

You need to ask the designer or try and find the process and operating philosophy.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

It looks like the slurry transfer line between the mine and the wash plant is gravity flow. There must be a large elevation difference between the mine and the wash plant. If the relief valve and rupture disc are placed at the lowest point in the pipeline there could be overpressure issues from the static liquid level in the pipeline when downstream valves are closed? Just guessing not knowing the whole process.

Think you need to reword your query :

"My question is: Why are rupture discs and pressure relief valves used only on the slurry pipeline transfer between storage tank in mine plant and storage tank in wash plant side and not used throughout the entire system (including the mine and wash plant)? "
