Inserting BOM's

This is the first time I've had trouble with this. I've inserted a BOM in an assy dwg and one of the items has a character (the sine wave? I don't know what it's called) in the description and vendor columns. I looked at the parts custom properties and they seemed all right. Anybody know what's happening? Is there a limit to the number of characters in these columns? What I have to put in there dosen't begin to fill them up.

You can expand the column by opening the BOM and double clicking line between the columns to increase the column size.

Sorry you misunderstood. There is plenty of room in the columns for the text (not even half way filled up) I must have hit a maximum somewhere but I don't think it is the xcel column size.

I take it the "sine wave" character is the one next to your "1" key on a PS/2 keyboard. This is called a tilde.

I have never seen this on a BOM. The tilde was used on DOS to convert long filenames to 8.3 character format. There are ways to provoke windows into this format.

Is your field a filename? Could you be having problems with long filenames?

The ~ is also a character that SW uses to lock out other uses from being able to edit a document that is already open by another user by creating a hidden file in the form of ~filename.sldxxx where xxx is prt, asm or drw. Without seeing the assembly, I do not know how this relates to dj4244's problem though.

News flash!@!!
Now I'm really confused!!??
I edited the BOM (excell within SW) because I couldn't get SW TO WORK RIGHT(!!!) And guess what? I fixed the description and vendor for the part in question clicked outside the box and low and behold the part updated (which happened to be Item 5) and I LOST ITEM 1 from the BOM (It just disappeared) So now what? HOW the HECK do I get a correct BOM in this Blankity blank program!

Delete your BOM. Insert a new one. This a good strategy any time your BOM is acting weird.

This is also why you NEVER edit the BOM by hand. Someone else may go in there, have problems with the BOM, and do a delete and replace. All that stuff you did by hand is gone forever.

I have several times. The only reason I tried editing it is because SW will not put in in correctly!!!!

How much trouble is it to delete and replace the whole drawing view? That might fix something!

Perhaps SolidWorks itself is acting weird. When it gets too weird for me, I exit, reboot the computer, then restart. This fixes a lot of stuff.

Tried starting from scratch. New dwg with new exploded view. BOM is still in same condition. Have sent files to my VAR, they are looking at it. Thanks

One more thing to check:

Make sure you don't have any configuration-specific properties that are overriding the properties you want to use in the BOM.
