installing SW 2004

Should I leave 2003 on my machine or delete it prior to installing 2004?

I would delete it...but first try it on an old PC (Just in case). I had a major problem with upgrading once, so I always try it first on another.

Don't do and upgrade, do a new install and change the directory to where SW04 installs at.

I have SW01+, SW03 and SW04 all one machine and everything is great. You just have to pay attention to what your doing when installing and make a new installation each time and DON'T USE UPGRADE do an new installation and everything will be fine. I can't stress that enough.

SW needs to remove the upgrade option from that menu. I have yet to see that work correctly yet.

No it wouldn't hurt to delete it, but if you haven't ran SW04 and fully tested to make sure it works well for you and your with your products. It might benefical to keep SW03 on your system just in case you would need to backtrack back to SW03. Keep in mind you can't send SW04 files back to 03 still. That's why you need to fully test it before it's used in production.

Can anyone tell me how I can do a new install and still get photoworks? I originally purchased SW98 with photoworks and have always had to install from the original CD and then upgrade to the latest version.

That's a good question. I reformatted an old NT system and had to do a fresh install of SW 2003. Photoworks will no longer work (posted this in another thread). Is this any different with SW 2004? If not, how shall this be handled?

OK, hang on guys. First I assume you are still paying for support.

So you have the new disks - PhotoWorks is on every set of SW disks.

You have to tell it you want that program and it will ask you for the original (98?) disk serial number (just like SW), but it will install fine. I think it may have varied a little. Sometimes I seem to recall it comes up with the choice first, others it waits till after SW installs. You need to tells it to install other options, or something - it's there somewhere. If I get round to installng 2004 at home this weekend I will be more specific next week.

Now if you load SW 2004 you have to have PhotoWorks 2 which again is on the disk with SW. The old stuff will not work.

Im going to instl 04, and am following the directions in FAQ. Before i do so i wanted to do alittle recon and check out the registry before completly uninstalling 03. My OS is XP Pro. I have not uninstalled anything yet and i do not have:

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Solidworks
(there is no folder here)

I do however have:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Solidworks
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Solidworks Corporation

Is XP pro different from OS that is described in the FAQ section? Does XP pro handle this differently?

No XP pro and Windows 2000 are not any different when it comes to the registery.

There is a note in the FAQ "If some of those reg settings are not there, it's ok the Uninstall took them out. Continue on."

That means just like it sounds.

If you do a new install, how do you upgrade toolbox?

You should make all backups of all relivent data. Toolbox parts, templates, feature palette parts, etc...

Just reinstall the toolbox back in the same folder as it was before.

You are talking about reinstalling toolbox from 2004 correct?
If we reinstall toolbox in the same folder as before will we lose all of our configurations?

We tried a new install and pointed SW 2004 to the location of the old toolbox. We got an error saying that SW 2004 was not compatible with the old toolbox.

Aha!!! Yes, Yes, Yes, now I see the problem. Definitely do NOT do an upgrade. Do a full new install. Now, I know it looks like an upgrade should work, but it does not seem to most of the time for 2004. Someone suggested that it might have something to do with using the regular old fashioned install method on the your previous version and now using the Windows install method on this one. There were some comments along these lines when the Windows installer first came out for Sw in parallel a couple or revs ago. From 2004 on you don't get the choice any more.
