Instrument panel orientation

Can somebody steer me to the FAR (Part 23) that calls out instrument panel orientation to the aircraft major axes? Attitude/gyro instruments want to be oriented perpendicular to longitudinal axis but what about the basic panel??

Wouldn't you think that it would be most appropriate for the panel to face the direction the pilot is sitting?

Added to which human factors comes into it, with regard to which panels the pilots need to use on a regular basis, and also to avoid confusion with other panels.

To IRSTUFF...In fact it would be better if the panel would face aft if the pilot faces forward. Not face in the same direction. Right?

I've seen designs showing the basic panel tilted back 5 degrees but I'd like the FAR ref if there is one.

um yes ... the pilot needs to visually acquire the instruments ! ... hence rearward facing instruments can be seen by a forward facing pilot !!

as for tilting the panel , this is a human factor problem. plenty planes have vertical panels ... inclining sligtly, giving the pilot a truer view of the panel, sounds like a good idea.

I don't think there is anything in FAR 23. Most manufacturers make Attitude Indicators that are set up for panels that are either perpendicular, or inclined 5 degrees or 7 degrees. Check the various manufacturers of ADIs.

I believe that MIL-I-5997B describes the general requirements for how an instrument panel is installed, to include the panels orientation to the aircraft and pilots. It is not current.

Thanks for the lead to MIL-STD-1333: It provided some help and leaves it open to the designer. I'll keep that doc.

And to Fieldteam.. The Mil Spec you mentioned (MIL-I-5997B)is now history and replaced by FED-STD 595 that I cannot access since I do not have a DOD account. Can you help with that doc?

Sorry, 595 is a paint color standard. It's actually kind of cool. You request the standard for a particular color, and you expect some sort of CIE color coordinate or some such, but no, they send you a paint chip ;-)
